Artist in Residence Dave Cyca

This week’s post is all about the music! At Val Marie’s provincially recognized ecomuseum, Prairie Wind & Silver Sage, the summer 2014 Artist Residency program continues, in partnership with Grasslands National Park, funded by the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskCulture. During the first part of September, Swift Current’s own Dave Cyca brings his Open Song projects to the southwest. Next week, tune in for Gerri Ann Siwek’s Open Art projects. Now, read on!

If you’ve ever wanted to explore songwriting or if you’ve already had some experience but want to get more feedback, PWSS and artist in residence Dave Cyca are hosting a Songwriting Workshop on Sunday, September 7, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Seniors’ Centre in Val Marie . You’ll learn about song structure, writing lyrics and creating a hook, and Dave will offer many tips and ideas for getting started in songwriting. Bring your instrument if you have one. This workshop for teens to adults costs just $20 is and preregistration is required. Preregister by emailing laureen@grasslandsgallery.com or phone 306-298-7782. Participants are limited to 10 so don’t miss out.

And there’s an Open Mic at the Val Marie Hotel on Saturday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m.  Come to read, perform a couple of songs, or just to cheer. The last open mic, hosted by Rhonda Gallant-Morari as part of her Open Poetry Residency earlier in August, was a big success. This one is sure to be too. Be a part of the fun!

If you’re travelling to Val Marie for these events. information on great accommodation and good places to eat is here. Driving directions are here.

Dave Cyca is the second artist in residence in Val Marie this summer, with an amazing range of song-focused projects to look forward to. Dave is a small town Saskatchewan farm boy now living in Swift Current. He has shared his music as a solo performer and collaborated with many other musicians, where his bang-on vocal harmonies are always a pleasure. Dave’s album One of These Days, with its thoughtful lyrics and strong melodies, was nominated for the Saskatchewan Country Music Association Best Roots Album of the year award 2012.

Dave Cyca also performs with the band Creek City and he’s bringing them along to Val Marie for a concert, one evening only. Dave and the guys performed at the Val Marie Elevator Committee’s Harvest Supper fundraiser last November, and once again you’ll enjoy their balanced and easy blend of vocal harmonies, expressive guitar work and thoughtful lyrics – Cat Stevens meets Blue Rodeo meets James Taylor. Creek City will be at the Val Marie Hotel on Friday, August 29 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are just $15 at the door.
