Description
“Purple Sweet Potato Custard Pie” by Madeleine Greenway is a linocut print on white rice paper. It blends simple shapes with intricate details and showcases the artist’s value of caring for one another through the shared experience of food. In this original print we also see how the creation and production of what we eat can be a source of joy and play.
An original print is an artwork that an artist creates and prints by hand. It is not a reproduction of an original. Each piece is handcrafted in its own right.
To make a linocut, the artist cuts away from a block of linoleum, then inks the uncut areas and prints from them. When the artist places her carved, inked block face-down on a piece of paper, the printed image appears as a mirror image of the block.
Rice papers are made either from the pith of a small tree, Tetrapanax Papyrifer, or from the bark fibres of the mulberry tree, not from rice. The term rice paper comes from the paper’s translucency, which is like that of a grain of rice. Rice paper is often highly textured and is both acid-free and long=lasting.
