Description
“Small Wonders: Mr Baltimore” by Laureen Marchand is a celebration of a celebratory bird. The rich, whistling song of the Baltimore oriole, echoing from treetops near homes and parks, is a sweet herald of spring in North America. These birds love ripe fruit, and especially in spring when looking their best is paramount, are happiest with oranges. Surprisingly, the orange in oranges makes the male’s bright breast even brighter.
Though the Baltimore oriole is still found in abundance, there populations have had a cumulative decline of 36% between 1966 and 2019. Yet they are still a bird with hope. Conservation of American elm trees and reduction of insecticide spraying into trees is all it would take to bring them back. Laureen Marchand says, “Climate change can feel so overwhelming, I wanted to offer something smaller. Something that people can hold and take in, and maybe realize that doing one small thing for one small bird might be what makes the difference to what we all see happening.”
Laureen Marchand offers us a chance to hold in our hands inspiration for nature-based solutions to the climate crisis. Her miniature bird paintings are ecological art meant to spark joy and bring a smile to your face. They provide a period of peace.
