Description
“Terra Firma 1” by Edie Marshall is a step away from her larger scale abstract landscape oil paintings. But it’s also a step closer, as the artist abandons the distant view for an intimate one. Terra Firma means dry land, or solid ground. The term is usually used by voyagers as they celebrate their return to Earth. In this series, what is on the horizon may be less important than what is under our feet.
In Western art, paintings were generally made on panel until the 15th century. Then canvas was adopted as the preferred support across much of Europe. Artists who use the older method find that colors are reflected back to the viewer rather than absorbed into the canvas weave or paper fibers. Artists who want the beauty of their brush marks to show on consistent, smooth surface benefit from working on a panel.
