Description
In “Wolf Pack on Dempster Highway” by John J Penner we experience the untamed spirit of north of the 60th Parallel in a single image. A pack of wolves gracefully traverse a snow-covered highway, transforming it into a wilderness trail. In this striking monochrome photograph, the artist vividly suggests the isolated yet spectacular beauty of the Arctic. It’s an unexpected blend of nature and human infrastructure as these majestic creatures roam freely amidst the pristine winter landscape.
John J Penner printed “Wolf Pack on Dempster Highway” using a process called piezography. Piezography a is a black and white printing process also known as carbon inkjet printing. It works with five to seven gray ink gradations and was first developed by Jon Cone in 2000. The inks are made from pure carbon pigments, which gives the print exceptional durability. Thanks to the fine gradation of the inks, piezography achieves a resolution and colour that is not possible with any other inkjet printing process. In “Wolf Pack on Dempster Highway”, John J. Penner uses seven different hues of carbon ink in warm and cool variations, producing great clarity and detail. This photograph glows with a sense of the mystery of some of the northernmost parts of Canada and the United States.
The Dempster Highway is Canada’s only all-season public road to cross the Arctic Circle. At 740 km (458 mi.) of unpaved road, it traverses some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet. Using a combination of seasonal ferry services and winter ice bridges, it opened in November 2017, creating the first all-weather road route connecting the Canadian road network with the Arctic Ocean.
