Silk screen printing is also called screenprinting or serigraphy. It’s a printing process used to produce original prints in sets called editions. In the process, ink is transferred onto a paper surface through a mesh screen, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. Editions are limited in number due to inevitable wearing out of the stencil. One colour is printed at a time, so several screens are used to produce a multi-coloured image or design. Screen printing artists create the image and the stencils and must also line up successive stencils so all the colours align with each other and have the proper placement on the final artwork.
