Description
“Today’s bouquet 06-06” by Dawna Rose is an example of the way the artist suits her materials to her subject rather than expecting any one medium to be everything. Here we see the softness of soft pastels underlining the fragility of blossoms almost at the end of life. Yet because of the artist’s gentle understanding of our need for beauty, the flowers seem to lose no loveliness as they fade. The series is abstract flower painting that brings the subject to life.
This painting is one in an occasional series of artworks that came out of an artist residency in 2022. Dawna says, “It was the depths of winter and I was in residency at AKA Artist Centre studios in Saskatoon and wanted a diversion from [my current project] and the plague in general…I made these mostly in colour and posted them to social media under the title ‘Today’s bouquet. Everybody needs one’. Because I did and I think other people do too.”
Soft pastels are composed of pigment, water and a smaller amount of chalk or artificial binder. The soft texture of these crayons can create smooth, smudgy lines and intense colour. Soft pastels cannot be mixed on a palette but must be applied individually. For this reason, many artists use an extensive range of colours.
