Description
“Still Life with Morandi” by Betsy Rosenwald displays both her own vision and that of the legendary Italian artist Giorgio Morandi. Morandi’s paintings used great subtlety in depicting simple subjects with only slight variations in tone, as does this drawing. As well, the materials Betsy Rosenwald uses are as unobtrusive as her handling of the objects she recreates. Dark grey charcoal, slight interjections of coloured pastels and a background of tan-coloured paper could hardly be quieter. But though Betsy Rosenwald handles her expressionist monochrome drawing with as much delicacy as Morandi did, her act of juxtaposing her images with his is anything but timid.
